The Called2Serve Story
Founded in 2003, Called2Serve NFP began as a shared vision between three friends dedicated to the youth of Chicagoland. What started as casual conversations during daily walks in the park soon evolved into a formal mission to empower the next generation.
Our co-foundersโMcKinley Byrd Sr., Michelle Byrd, and Antwan McHenryโbrought years of experience teaching children at the Monroe Street Church of Christ in Chicago. With the professional guidance of Daryl Cheeks Sr. (Taylor Cheeks & Associates LTD), the organization officially secured its 501(c)(3) status and began its journey of community service.
A Legacy of Impact
From our earliest days, we have focused on providing creative and essential outlets for young people:
- Arts & Expression: We have hosted numerous youth open mics and produced successful plays written and performed by the very students we serve.
- Community Nutrition: In partnership with Monroe Street Church of Christ, we operated a vital summer food program in East Garfield Park from 2010 to 2013.
Growing Together
As our reach expanded, so did our programming. Through a strategic collaboration with U Can Turn It Around (a nonprofit founded by Antwan McHenry), we have continued to develop innovative initiatives that meet the evolving needs of our community.
Today, Called2Serve is proud to be the home of:
- Year of Da King
- Capture Love
- Drama Gyrlz
The Healing Corner Chicago (for which we serve as the fiscal agent)
